Travel and tourism is one of the most significant and reliable industries in America. A 1.7 trillion dollar business, more than 10 million people nationwide are directly or indirectly reliant on travel for employment. The U.S. Travel Association reports that direct spending by domestic and international travelers generated 704 billion dollars in the U.S. economy in 2009.

"Increasing travel and promoting tourism is a proven means to boost the economy, create jobs, and
generate tax revenue," says Linda Parkowski, Director of Tourism. "When people visit the First State,
they spend money on hotels, dining, and attractions which benefits local businesses and the
Delaware receives over 8 million visitors annually. In Delaware, Tourism is a 1.5 billion dollar

After several consecutive years of declining travel, the U.S. Travel Association is projecting modest
increases in leisure and business travel in 2010 and anticipates the creation of 90,000 new jobs. The
U.S. Travel Association projects 1.95 billion domestic person-trips will take place in 2010, a 2 percent
increase from 2009. International travelers are expected to total 56.5 million this year, indicating an
increase of close to 3 percent from last year, according to U.S. Travel.
