Explore the state of Delaware
Dover, Del. (July 18, 2011) - The summer season is in full swing and visitors are flocking to Delaware to enjoy the First State's vast statewide offerings and attractions. One tank away from 23 million people in surrounding metropolitan areas, out-of-state visitors are realizing that Delaware is a convenient, affordable, and diverse destination. With the onset of the summer season, Delaware beaches have experienced an increase in traffic and a significant increase in overnight occupancies in comparison to last year. Plus, there is plenty of summer left to enjoy!
"Travel and tourism plays a vital role in our state's economy," said Governor Jack Markell. "A 1.9 billion dollar business employing 39,000 people, the Delaware tourism industry is poised to achieve continued, sustainable growth."
"Tourism has proven to be an economic mainstay for Delaware," stated Alan Levin, Director of the Delaware Economic Development Office. "As the fifth largest employer in the state, the tourism industry has grown 26 percent since 2007 and generated 1,000 new tourism-related jobs for Delaware."
"The state's tourism sales and marketing efforts are paying off," said Linda Parkowski, Director of Tourism, Delaware Tourism Office. "Increased visitation has led to job creation, additional spending, and tax revenues. The gains to Delaware far outweigh the state's marketing investment."
The U.S. Travel Association recently announced that one-fifth of the new U.S. jobs generated in June were added in the travel industry. A $1.8 trillion business, the travel and tourism industry ranks among the top 10 industries in the nation supporting 14 million U.S. jobs. A recent study commissioned by the U.S. Travel Association and conducted by Longwoods International indicates that cutting back on destination marketing programs is counterproductive to economic growth.
The Delaware Tourism Office, 99 Kings Highway in Dover, Del., a division of the Delaware Economic Development Office, promotes tourism and economic growth in Delaware.
