Set off on your Delaware Beer, Wine and Spirits Trail adventure in the best place in the state to see the sun set – the beaches. The trail’s route through southern Delaware takes you through some of the best beach towns on the East Coast.
It will also take you to one of the best craft breweries not just on the East Coast but in the entire country, Dogfish Head. Once you spot the steampunk-style treehouse outside the Milton brewery, you’re about to experience Delaware’s beloved “off-centered ales for off-centered people.” Food is also available at the brewery, but for a full menu’s worth of choices, save your appetite for a stop at the Dogfish Brewpub in Rehoboth Beach, the place where the Dogfish legend started, and where you might get some of the experimental brews that Dogfish serves only at the pub. The Delaware staple even owns a hotel. Totally immerse yourself in its off-centered culture with a stay at the Dogfish Inn located in Lewes.
You can also pamper yourself with a stay at the Bellmoor Inn & Spa in Rehoboth. And leave some time to browse the offbeat galleries and unique shops in the downtown of one of America’s best beach towns. Or head to nearby Tanger Outlet Centers along DE 1 for even more tax-free shopping.
Go just a little farther up the road to the Delaware Distilling Company. It is one of just a handful of distilleries on the country that is under the same roof as a full service restaurant and bar. You’ll find craft liquors, spiced rum, unique cocktails, and a 20 flavor infusion bar. Keep heading north, and you’ll soon be at Nassau Valley Vineyards, a trail stop that delivers a peaceful and scenic country setting.
The allure of sea, sand, wind and waves is also hard to ignore here. Take a quick drive outside of Lewes – a charming old fishing village filled with shops and restaurants – and spend some time exploring Cape Henlopen State Park, where a soothing natural beauty is accompanied by plentiful opportunities to sunbathe, fish, bike and explore.
Follow the setting sun west to 3rd Wave Brewing Co. in Delmar and 16 Mile Brewing Company in Georgetown. If a well-crafted meal seems a suitable conclusion to your cross-county adventures, consider dinner at Abbott’s on Broad Creek, the offshoot of the popular Abbott’s Grill in Milford and one of Western Sussex’s culinary gems.
