Memorial Day weekend is here and so begins the summer season in Delaware!

Bring your sunscreen, beach towel, a big appetite and prepare to unwind on your weekend getaway! Here are some travel tips for Memorial Day weekend in Delaware plus, a list of events and things to do.

Tips:

∙ Planning a Memorial Day BBQ? Serve up some local flavor by offering local wine and beer from the locations on the Delaware Wine and Ale Trail.

∙ Summer in Delaware also means its time for delicious steamed crabs! Learn how to pick and eat a steamed crab from a Delaware waterman and you’ll be the envy at your next crab feast!

∙ The Cape May Lewes Ferry is a 90-minute scenic ride for travelers visiting the Delaware beach area. Vehicle and foot passengers can purchase tickets online or at the ferry terminal. If you’re a vehicle passenger it highly recommended to make a reservation.

∙ The Jolly Trolley Shuttle Service is a convenient way to travel between Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach. They’ve announced the following hours: May 23rd (8:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m.); May 24th (3:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m.); May 25th till Labor Day (8:00 a.m. – 2:00 a.m.). Rates are $3.00 one-way and $5.00 round trip.

∙ Use the DART First State’s Park and Ride lot located on Shuttle Rd. off of Delaware Rt. 1, north of Rehoboth Avenue to ride in comfort to the outlets, boardwalk and beach areas. Park for $8.00 and receive up to 4 free unlimited ride daily bus passes. All buses are air conditioned and equipped with wheelchair lifts and can carry 2 bikes. DART’s Route 305 Beach Connection, operates from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekends and provides service from Wilmington to Rehoboth Beach on Friday – Sunday nights. It’s a common refrain from folks who have just experienced Firefly, the three-day music festival in central Delaware that's becoming one of the nation’s premier rock events:

“Is it too early to get tickets for next year?”

Once they’ve been to the Firefly Music Festival, it becomes an annual ritual for its many fans, partly because of the stellar lineup – the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Tom Petty are headliners this year – and partly because of the free-wheeling and fun atmosphere that pervades this 87-acre site situated centrally on the Mid-Atlantic coast.

In one corner, there’s the wildly popular TOMS Style Your Sole center, newly expanded for 2013, promising to “hook you up with the coolest pair of shoes you can dream up.” Customers who buy a pair on-site get the chance to work with their expert artists to customize their “one-of-a-kind kicks.” In another section, campers and their more-pampered brethren, the “Glampers,” create their homes-away-from-home in a woodsy setting.

Yes, it’s the music – always the music – that brings tens of thousands to the Firefly Music Festival, but it’s also the attractions, the abundance of offbeat diversions, that keeps them coming back. Just take a look at this year’s special features:

-- Last year’s shady refuge for the weary – the “Hammock Hangouts” – are back and bigger than ever.

--Another returning feature is The Arcade, where free access to vintage electronic games gives festival-goers a chance to while away their time between acts.

--Once the sun sets, check out The Pathway, a forest clearing filled with light shows and video displays, guaranteed to “put your neighborhood Christmas-lighting enthusiast to shame.”

Tune in for spring and summer sounds

The Firefly Music Festival is far from the only must-see music event that will get Delaware visitors moving this year. Spring and summer bring an array of offerings from the top of the state to the bottom, ranging from rock to jazz to funk, in venues both large and small.

For a fun (and free) week of smooth, sophisticated listening, Wilmington’s DuPont Clifford Brown Jazz Festival is the place to be June 19-22. For a more intimate (and frequently frenetic) experience, head south to Delaware’s laid-back beach towns, where national acts are a regular treat each summer.

In typical Delaware style, this year’s beach lineup features a who’s-who of well-known acts, all playing in settings that promise up-close-and-awe-struck experience. The scene is especially intense at Dewey Beach’s legendary music destination, the Bottle & Cork, where fans can catch Kevin Bacon and The Bacon Brothers (May 30); George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic (June 21-22); Kellie Pickler (July 25); and Shooter Jennings (July 30).

Things get country-fied in a big way starting in June, when the Harrington Raceway and Casino hosts the Rascal Flatts (June 1) followed by the Delaware State Fair hosting its annual slate of Nashville’s best, including Luke Bryan (July 18), Trace Adkins (July 21) and Dierks Bentley (July 23), along with Christian Rock performers MercyMe (July 19), singer Victoria Justice (July 20), and comedian Jeff Dunham (July 23).

Tucked along the coast in Fenwick Island, the Freeman Stage at Bayside brings a summer-long onslaught of marquee acts, including Lyle Lovett & His Acoustic Group (July 10); Sheryl Crow (July 14); Darius Rucker (Aug. 8); Michael McDonald (Aug. 10); and Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo (Aug. 13).

Farther north in Wilmington (a quick trip from Baltimore and Philly), music fans are fortunate to have both the Grand Opera House and the World Cafe Live at the Queen, both cozy venues that boast a name-dropping summer lineup. At the Grand, Melissa Etheridge rolls into town on June 26; and at the Queen, there’s a steady stream of classic acts, including The English Beat and the Bullbuckers (May 3) and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (May 7).

And the music plays on: On July 18, Wilmington’s Ladybug Music Festival showcases some of the region’s top female musicians; and on Aug. 2-4, the city hosts its annual outdoor Riverfront Blues Festival, situated by the banks of the Christina River just a quick trip from some of Wilmington’s hippest new restaurants and activities.
