Located on an island in the middle of the Delaware River, this site is accessible by ferry (seasonally) from Delaware City. By 1862 the fort and surrounding grounds were being utilized as a prison for suspected Southern sympathizers and captured Confederates. Nearly 30,000 prisoners were housed here during the course of the war. The park offers a wide range of living history experiences provided by first-person interpreters whose re-creation of the lives of the fort’s inhabitants makes for a truly memorable experience. Please call for hours of operation.
