Kalmar Nyckel is a re-creation of the Tall Ship, built by the Dutch in 1625, that brought the first permanent European settlers to the Delaware Valley in 1638. She is a three-masted, square-rigged pinnace (an armed merchant ship) with over eight miles of rigging, a bowsprit with mast and fighting top (the only one in the western hemisphere), and a whipstaff for a helm. True to the period of the original, she is heavily and beautifully carved, a photographer’s dream. The length of the ship is 141 feet overall; the beam is 25 feet. We draw 12.5 feet.
