Delaware Winter Festivals and Events

Delaware’s historic towns and charming nooks come alive during the holiday season, thanks to Yuletide tours, dazzling light displays, stage classics, festive parades and other events that capture the joy and spirit celebrated each year in the First State. Winter festivals and events in Delaware take place from early November through the first week of January and include holiday-themed exhibits at museums like Hagley Museum and Winterthur Museum, Garden, and Library; house tours in historic Lewes and Odessa; and parades in towns both large (Wilmington) and small (Milton). And while Delaware’s beaches are known as the capital of summer fun, the town of Rehoboth offers one of the state’s most iconic symbols of the season when it lights its 30-foot tree.

Lake Street Dive

January 17, 2013
How is it that something so unlikely can also be so infectious, so naturally exhilarating? Pulling in familiar elements and irreverently scrambling and recombining them, Lake Street Dive are at once jazz-schooled, DIY-motivated, and classically pop obsessed. Beginning with catchy songs that are by turns openhearted and wryly inquisitive, this northeastern quartet proceeds to inject them with an irresistible blend of abandon and precision. Composed of drummer Mike Calabrese, bassist Bridget… More

vinyl shockley

January 19, 2013
After successfully supporting others as a drummer, Ed Shockley, the guiding force behind vinyl shockley, decided to finally pursue his dream. As a singing drummer, Ed had been discouraged from attempting to "front" a band from behind the kit. "Different managers and record companies had asked me to move either to the keyboards or out front to more effectively lead a band, and I've tried it all. But nothing ever feels as good or as natural to me as singing and playing drums."… More

Iris Dement

January 22, 2013
Iris DeMent's pure storytelling and powerful, trembling soprano first floored listeners on her 1992 debut "Infamous Angel," a collection of introspective songs about faith, loss and love (gone good and bad). Her stunning follow-up a year later, "My Life," had even more ache and polish, but retained a folky guitar/standup bass/piano soundscape. She toughened things up on "The Way I Should," adding a rocking sound and cutting social issue-based protest songs like… More

Tracy Grammer

January 26, 2013
A favorite on the folk circuit, Tracy Grammer is primarily known as a sensitive, creative song interpreter, with warm vocals, a girl-next-door stage presence, pristine fingerstyle guitar, and an unshakeable dedication to celebrating the legacy of her late partner, songwriter Dave Carter. Her quick wit and writer's eye also make her a powerful story teller, and it's often the case that at the end of the night, audiences can't decide which they loved better -- the songs, or the stories behind… More

Freelance Whales

February 1, 2013
To call them multi-instrumentalists might be a little overdone. The kids in Freelance Whales are really just collectors, at heart. They don't really fancy buffalo nickels or Victorian furniture, but over the past two years, they've been collecting instruments, ghost stories, and dream-logs. Somehow, from this strange compost heap of little sounds and quiet thoughts, songs started to rise up like steam from the ground. The first performance of these songs took place in January of 2009, in Staten… More
