Need help with your news releases? Ever wondered what the secret is to catching a reporter’s attention?

If you’re looking for sure-fire ways to “Impress the Press,” then join us for a half-day summit on Oct. 13 at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino.

Targeted toward small businesses and local organizations that want to do a better job leveraging media publicity, the “Impress the Press” morning summit will feature a lineup of public relations experts, including keynote speaker Brian Selander (Executive Vice President at Whistle Sports Network and one-time Chief Strategy Officer to Gov. Jack Markell); and Justin Williams (“Off-Centered Storyteller” at nationally revered Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Milton).

In addition, a special media panel discussion features prominent local journalists Tim Furlong (reporter at NBC-10); Amy Cherry (assistant news director at WDEL); and Phil Freedman (news director at News Journal). On-air talent Jill Horner of Comcast, who leads the media-consulting firm JCH Media, will help guide the conversation.

“An effective public relations strategy is as crucial as ever to groups and businesses,” said Bernice Whaley, Director of the Delaware Economic Development Office, which co-sponsored the event with the Delaware Tourism Office. “When a press release attracts media coverage, the rewards can be phenomenal. The trick, however, is getting their attention – and that’s what we aim to teach at the summit.”

The summit will touch on the basic elements of an effective press release, the “dos-and-donts” of issuing a press release (including timing and content); and what to do if the press release just “doesn’t work.”

“The speakers at ‘Impress the Press’ deal with press releases day in and day out,” said Linda Parkowski, Director of the Delaware Tourism Office. “This summit is a rare chance to get an insider’s view of how effective press releases are crafted, and see why some work better than others.”

Cost of the “Impress the Press” summit is $20, and includes continental breakfast and lunch. The morning gets under way with registration/breakfast from 8:30-9 a.m., and will wrap up with the keynote address (10:55-noon) and lunch/networking (starting at noon).
