The Delaware Wine and Ale Trail is getting a spirited new identity.
This visitor-friendly collection of First State breweries and wineries is adding four new locations -- two of them distilleries – making it a better time than ever to explore this tasty journey.
Now known as the “Delaware Beer, Wine and Spirits Trail,” the statewide self-paced tour is designed to give travelers a convenient and fun way to explore the many tours and tastings available in the state. The trail’s “passport” system allows participants to track their travels and potentially earn prizes.
While the “new” trail will officially be launched later in fall 2014, visitors are encouraged to get a head start. The new attractions on the trail include:
-- Delaware Distilling Company, Rehoboth Beach. Calling itself the “East Coast’s premier distillery/ restaurant experience,” DDC is one of just a handful of distilleries under the same roof as a full service restaurant and bar. Specialties include craft liquors, unique cocktails, a 20-flavor infusion bar, and tours.
-- Painted Stave Distilling, Smyrna. This craft distillery is located in a converted 1940's movie theater, and prides itself on producing premium craft spirits from local raw materials. Open for tours, tastings and sales. Group tours and private events are welcome.
-- Argilla Brewing Co. @ Pietro's Pizza, Newark. This family-run pizzeria has been in business for 36 years, but its latest achievement is the installation of a small microbrewery, which produces a variety of IPAs to accompany the restaurant’s pizza pies and pub-style sandwiches.
-- Mispillion River Brewing Company, Milford. The year-round IPAs and porters here are supplemented by single-hop specialty brews, once-and-done surprises and tasting room exclusives. Tours are available, and the action at the 15-barrel brew house can be viewed from the tasting room window while sitting at the bar and enjoying a cold pint.
To participate in the trail, go to the trail website, which includes listings of locations and instructions on downloading and completing the passport. The website is also designed to help visitors find lodging and locate other nearby attractions.
