Memorial Day is the unofficial start to summer and the perfect weekend to begin your favorite summer activities and even try out some new ones.

Delaware Steamed Crabs1. Get grilling
It’s simple to host a truly Delaware Memorial Day cookout at your home or rental without needing to travel very far. Fresh fruits and veggies are easily found at any of Delaware’s farmers’ markets, all of which are open for the season. Try local blue crabs for your main course from one of Delaware’s top crabhouses which bring in fresh catches bright and early every morning.

2. Say cheers
With more than 30 craft beverage destinations, it’s easy to partake an afternoon or evening tasting of beer, wine, mead, whiskey and more. Let the Delaware on Tap app be your guide on your tasting adventure. The app shows you the closest craft brew locations, lists top events and even helps you hail an Uber.

3. Spend a day on the water
Take advantage of Delaware’s location by taking a dip in the ocean or sailing your boat on the bay. To get a workout during a day on the water, try kayaking at Trap Pond State Park or paddleboarding on the bay. If you prefer slides and rides, try Jungle Jim’s Water Park in Rehoboth Beach or Killens Pond Water Park in Felton. For a relaxing evening experience, get tickets for a sunset tour on the Cape Water Taxi.

4. Leave the driving to someone else
Getting to Delaware’s beaches doesn’t have to involve a long highway drive. If you’re coming from New Jersey, take the Cape May-Lewes Ferry for 90 minutes of relaxation before the fun starts. If coming for the north, try DART First State’s new Park and Ride which lets you drop your car in Lewes and ride the bus into Rehoboth. Consider the Jolly Trolley for late night adventures – it’s an inexpensive and convenient option to travel between Rehoboth and Dewey. The Trolley runs until 2 a.m.Dogfish Head Brewery Milton

5. Groove to live music
The beach music scene heats up at sundown on Memorial Day weekend with Dewey Beach’s bars hosting live bands until the bars close down at 1 a.m. The Starboard and Rusty Rudder are top spots for live music in the small beach town. The Rehoboth Beach Bandstand is the perfect stop for boardwalk entertainment Saturday night; the family friendly show is a fun sight before or after a visit to Funland.
