Sometimes, those end-of-summer moments are the sweetest ones of the year. Now is the perfect time to explore Delaware’s still-simmering beach scene, or get up and get moving on an outdoor adventure. Here are a few of the state’s best Labor Day Weekend events – along with a few more reasons to explore while the season's still sunny and warm.
Get Artsy at the Arden Fair (Sept. 3)
Bring the whole family to browse artisans and artists, enjoy children’s rides and games, or just relax and grab a bite to eat on a grassy hillside. Be sure to check out the Antiques Market and the amazing used-book sale!
Go on an Outdoor AdventureHere’s your chance to finally explore the wilder side of Delaware: Try a paddling trip at Fenwick Island State Park or Delaware Seashore State Park, or just wander the trails that meander through the dunes at Cape Henlopen State Park, and along the water at Killens Pond State Park. Check out Delmarva Board Sports for more rentals and excursions at the Delaware beaches.
Ride the Steam Train (Sept. 3, 10)
The season’s last few excursions aboard the Wilmington and Western Railroad leave the station soon, taking you (and your picnic basket) on a leisurely 1½-hour round-trip ride to the scenic Mt. Cuba Picnic Grove. All aboard!
Get the Eagles Experience (Sept. 3-4)
Nostalgic feelings are inevitable this weekend at Milton Theatre, where the tribute band 7 Bridges is offering “The Ultimate Eagles Experience.” Tickets available through the Milton Theatre website, but hurry, they’re going fast!
Catch a Seafood Dinner with a View
The sight of water seems to make meals more memorable: Head to Big Fish Grill in Wilmington; JP's on the Wharf in Frederica; or settle in for a beautiful view of the bay at Grain on the Rocks in Lewes. Feeling adventurous? Try your hand at picking crabs at Boondocks Restaurant in Smyrna, or explore this roundup of Delaware's Top Waterfront Dining spots.
Wonderful Wings & Wine (Sept. 4)
Get cozy at the beautiful Harvest Ridge Winery this Sunday for a “wings and wine” pairing event, featuring four delicious wines/ciders and four spectacular wing flavors. Tickets must be purchased in advance: Here’s the link for tickets.
End the Season at a Jazz Funeral (Sept. 5)
Known as one of the nation’s "most unusual end-of-summer celebrations," the Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral bids farewell to the season with a parade along the boardwalk promenade in true New Orleans-style, complete with Dixieland Jazz band and “mourners” dressed in black. But don’t be sad: The tempo picks up once the parade reaches the Bandstand!
Pipe Out the Summer (Sept. 5)
Not to be outdone by its coastal neighbor, Rehoboth Beach holds its own Piping Out of Summer Parade on The Boardwalk, starting at the Henlopen Hotel and marching musically down to the Bandstand, accompanied by the sound of spectators’ kazoos.
Explore the Riverfront
The time is right to wander the scenic waterside path at Riverfront Wilmington, stopping at such popular eateries as Iron Hill Brewery and Banks Seafood Kitchen, or catching a movie at Penn Cinema IMAX theater. Afterward, explore the Delaware Children’s Museum, take a bike ride along the Jack A. Markell Trail, or tee up for a round of putt-putt at Riverwalk Mini Golf. Finish the day with a cold one at the pet-friendly Constitution Yards Beer Garden.
