The US Life-Saving Service (the early Coast Guard) were the heroes of their day, rescuing ships in distress. They were also innovators! Rowing their surf boats into dangerous seas risked the lives of everyone, so they invented an ingenius system to save shipwreck victims from shore: the breeches buoy. Visit us on the Green as we demonstrate the function of this incredibly successful life saving device with the help of our colleagues at the Indian River Life-Saving Station at Delaware Seashore State Park! You might also take a walking tour exploring the trades people who called Dover their home (10 a.m. - 3 p.m.), visit the Old State House and Johnson Victrola Museums (reservations required), and view the rare artwork at the Biggs Museum of American Art (10 a.m. - 4 p.m.).
