25 The Green

For generations, The Green has been the symbolic heart of this historic city, established by William Penn in 1683. Seat of county government and center for community life in Colonial days, this location gained importance in 1777 when state government was moved here from New Castle. Of the many noteworthy events that have taken place on The Green, the most historically significant was the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, at the Golden Fleece Tavern on December 7, 1787, making Delaware the first state to approve the new frame of government.
