First State National Historical Park
The first Swedish and Finnish settlers aboard the Kalmar Nyckel and Fogel Grip landed at Fort Christina in 1638. Named after the then-12-year-old queen of Sweden, it was the country’s first settlement in the New World and the first non-native settlement in Delaware. The rocks that were the site of the actual landing are still visible.
Visiting: It is open for tours by park or Kalmar Nyckel staff. Fort Christina is not open to the public on a daily basis.
