Museums
Dover boasts several museums with an array of collections and stories exploring topics ranging from the history of our nation to modern art. Located near the state capitol building, Legislative Hall, you'll find the Biggs Museum of American Art which houses one of the finest collections of American fine and decorative arts along with new exhibitions. Just a few steps from the Biggs Museum, you can discover the Old State House. Built in 1791, the Old State House served as Delaware's capitol building until 1933.
Also in downtown Dover, you'll find the Johnson Victrola Museum, which documents the achievements of Delaware native Eldridge Reeves Johnson. Johnson was a recording industry pioneer, inventor, and successful businessman during the first quarter of the 20th century. Exhibits at the museum include phonographs, recordings, and other artifacts associated with the origins of the recording industry and Johnson’s career.
Just a short drive from downtown Dover, you can explore the John Dickinson Plantation, home to a framer and signer of the U.S. Constitution and known as the “Penman of the Revolution.” The museum shares the stories of the tenant farmers, indentured servants, free and enslaved Black men, women, and children who lived, labored, and died on the plantation.
Located down the road from the John Dickinson Plantation, you can explore the only institution in the country dedicated to airlift and air refueling history at the Air Mobility Command Museum. The museum is located in historic Hangar 1301, a World War II-era site for the top-secret development of rocket weaponry, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Featuring a fascinating collection of rare vintage aircraft, visitors can climb aboard planes ranging from World War II propeller aircraft to current four-engine jet transports. Gear up for a good time at Dover Motor Speedway! This racing venue has famously hosted more than 50 years of NASCAR Cup Series races and is often referred to as the Monster Mile due to its intense, one-of-a-kind concrete race track, which replaced the original asphalt surface in 1995. Perhaps even more famous than the Monster Mile is its enormous mascot, Miles the Monster. This 46-foot-tall, 40,000-pound monument is shown bursting triumphantly out of the ground of Victory Plaza, holding a full-sized car in its raised fist.
