New Stays & Places to Play

Southern Delaware already shines year-round—but even more excitement is on the horizon, with new experiences and fresh reasons to plan your visit.

You may have already stayed at several hotels or inns in southern Delaware, but try something new like a stylish stay at a unique hotel or inn to experience the beach towns . The newly opened Waypoint Hotel in Rehoboth Beach includes beautifully renovated rooms and suites located near all of the exciting shopping and dining on Rehoboth Avenue. Fully reimagined and thoughtfully reconstructed, the Waypoint is the perfect place to stay while traveling the Delaware coast.

Trap Pond State Park's Bald Cypress Trees on a sunny day.Keep the kids entertained on hot summer days and be some of the first visitors to The Cypress Splash Zone at Trap Pond State Park. Opening in mid-July, the new 5,000-square-foot water park will include four separate splash zones, each designed for specific age groups, and one intended for inclusive play for all children and their families. The site will also include an entry station and restrooms. Visit the park before or after the splash zone to explore the beauty of Trap Pond, including its bald cypress trees, canoeing and kayaking, paddleboat rentals, and several miles of walking and hiking trails.

In historic Lewes, the new Lightship Overfalls Museum continues the town’s legacy of preserving and honoring its lightships and their sailors. Not sure what a lightship is? Then you definitely have to visit. This floating lighthouse was built in 1938 for the U.S. Lighthouse Service, was decommissioned by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1972 and has been in Lewes, Delaware since 1973. Renamed Overfalls in honor of the Overfalls Shoals lightship station located nearby, the ship pays homage to the American lightship sailors that served there and is now preserved, maintained and operated by a dedicated team of volunteers.

Although the Freeman Arts Pavilion has been part of the Joshua M. Freeman Foundation for several years, it will be renovating its outdoor performing arts venue this year. The new 42-foot-tall by 100-foot-long stage will be finished for the pavilion’s July events. All your concerts, shows, dances, and more entertainment will be on a whole different level. When visiting, you will find a comfortable, modern environment and new seating on the terraced lawn.

Dining & Anniversaries

One of the best reasons to visit Delaware is the unique flavors and cuisine of southern Delaware, home to the Culinary CoastTM.

You can start your foodie adventure at either FINS Oyster Bar and Grill in Georgetown or Nossa Casa Brazilian Steakhouse in Millsboro, depending on your palate preference. Seafood lovers can indulge in succulent oysters and grilled delights in a welcoming atmosphere at FINS. If you want a relaxed dining experience with tableside service and the full Brazilian steakhouse experience, paired with delicious house-made Brazilian-inspired cocktails, Nossa Casa is the option for all meat lovers.

Your next stop is Milton, where you can try Lago Asian Cuisine and Sushi Bar, which opened recently. This restaurant offers an adventure in every dish, and you will be served fresh flavors that align with modern tastes. You can choose from a sushi roll, a delicious ramen bowl, or other options. Once you sit down, you will be surprised by their inventive flavor combinations.

The last stop will be based on your choice of beach town for the weekend. When visiting Rehoboth Beach, you can try fine dining at Eden and enjoy wines that complement your dish, or for a more tropical, Hawaiian flair, visit Nalu Surf Bar & Grill in Rehoboth or Dewey Beach. If you are heading to Lewes, Tea-Aki is another spot for refreshing bubble teas and a selection of Asian-flavored dishes. The new restaurant, Ocean 99, in Bethany Beach, is perfect for enjoying comfort seafood platters with regional flavors while taking in the beach view.

Not only is America marking its 250th anniversary this year, but several Southern Delaware shops also have big milestones to promote. Dolle’s has been a local favorite for candy and popcorn in Rehoboth Beach for decades; join them in celebrating their 100th anniversary! Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse will also celebrate its 100th anniversary with a cruise in September. If you love history and want to experience the Delaware tradition in Sussex County, save November 5 to be present for Return Day, a celebration of literally burying the hatchet and enjoying BBQ beef sandwiches and oyster fritters.
