Tournaments, Events & Athletic Meets Sponsorship (TEAMS) Program

The Delaware Tournaments, Events & Athletic Meets Sponsorship (TEAMS) Program is designed to assist organizations in the operation and/or development of sports events that will generate economic impact for the state. The program aims to attract new regional, national and international sporting events at amateur, collegiate and professional levels and ensure that current sports events maintain their place and continue to grow for years to come in Delaware.

The grant program is available for new events in the state or events that currently take place in Delaware and can use the program to expand or enhance their offerings.

The requesting organization must provide documentation outlining expected results from the event under consideration. In addition, the applicant will be required to define how the allocated funds will be used, as well as the scope of the event itself. Delaware Tourism Office (DTO) will review the measurement of both the anticipated, as well as the actual, economic impact. Financial resources will not be distributed until after a post-event report is provided to DTO.

All organizations, non-profit and for-profit, may apply only if their sports event takes place in Delaware. Applications for the program are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and will be reviewed in the order in which they are received until the funds are depleted.

It is imperative that the applicant provides a good faith estimate of anticipated economic impact, as evidenced by estimated numbers of participants, spectators, and total hotel room nights. Also, the applicant must define how those estimates were developed. Grossly inflated estimates will result in reduction of, or elimination of, consideration for future allocations.

* Please note that after review of the post-event report, DTO has discretion to adjust the estimated pre-event award amount based on data provided by the event organizer.

Program Requirements:

  • A complete application submission must occur at least 90 days prior to the beginning of your event.
  • The funds will only be distributed after a post-event assessment of economic impact data is collected by DTO from the event owner.
  • Incentive funds may be utilized to reduce expenses for event owners which include, but are not limited to: bid/rights fees, venue rental costs, production & technical costs, and other large expenses related to the direct operation of the event.
  • Incentive funds may not be utilized for advertising, transportation, staff salaries, capital expenses and other expenses not directly related to the successful operation of the event.
  • Any financial agreement will be terminated if the event is cancelled.
  • Event organizers must reapply every year for incentive amount.
  • DTO will have a presence (physical or digital) in return for the incentive amount, to be determined and agreed to between DTO and the event organizer.
